Till Apes release their latest EP ‘ill tapes Vol. 1' via Export Quality Records. This nine-track beat tape lays down a marker - a calling card for the wildly talented band and a demonstration of their collective skills. While presenting J Dilla-esque soundscapes full of mesmerizing samples, their unique sound owes largely to the use of live instruments by the dynamic six-piece ensemble. The EP was preceded by their single - Somewhere Safari, a percussive, floaty lead-in to this project. It's a dreamy ride, full of saxophone melodies, lush piano chords and crisp, groovy drumming. The EP itself opens with the dreamy and cyclical ‘A captive audience’ and quickly moves on to the afro-jazz sound from ‘Be Who’ which bursts into hip-hop before mellowing back into afro-jazz. The only track with recorded vocals on the EP, ‘Traffic’, is one to look out for - it carries a whimsical hook by Soorya and a hard-hitting verse by Hanumankind. The last track on the project is ‘That's just wine’, which builds on a staggered groove and a pensive saxophone melody which provides a fitting end to this body of work.
